And Spain voted again last Sunday

voting

Spain voted again last Sunday. And again, like in December 2015, the Popular party, the PP,  won the elections, even with a larger majority. A victory against the vast majority of Spanish Media, all the left-wing and some of the conservative, and even against of a significant part of the economic elite. The conservative voters have ratified what it was expressed in the surveys which some of the elites refused to recognize and accept: that the image of PM Rajoy is excellent among the PP´ voters, better than the other leaders´ among their voters. This is a fact which those elites committed to defenestrate Rajoy refused to accept.

The Spaniards have shown that did not want extremists’ adventures. These populist options have decreased by over one million votes. They have seen similar movements in other countries like Venezuela and Greece and what happened there has warned the Spanish people. The strategy of these populist formations is to offer the impossible in order to seize the power. And once they reach where they wanted, the power, the people helplessly see that their position worsens significantly.

It cannot be denied that the crisis shook severely the most modest economies, but it could not be believed that in the XXI century, a nation as vigorous as Spain, a booming economy within the European Union, it could have chosen an unstoppable road to the communism or populism.

But the Populism has not accepted their defeat. The results of the ballots were so far from their expectations that they cannot hide the failure. Since the last Sunday its leaders are resisting to take the slightest self-criticism. As a result they have come to talk about ‘lack of cleaning’ in the election count, and they have even insulted in the media to the voters of the winner party. It is the first time which has happened anything like it. The reality is that they have lost most of their votes in those cities where they are governing already for  a year, and it is not surprising: its only task was to change the names of streets according to their revanchist ideology.  From now on, they have a difficult task for which they have not proved to be prepared: managing the institutional political normality and acting according to the rules of democracy, assuming a parliamentary role without the glitter of television sets where they often frequent.

The Spanish liberal right-wing voters have supported Rajoy´s fundamental idea which is the politics in these years is, above all, making an effective management and getting Spain out of the economic crisis and recession. Against those whom demanded more emphasis in politics and less in the economics, the Spanish citizens have chosen the experience and seniority, the calm and responsibility and they have rejected and moved away from adventures which intended to carry out a deranged and impossible plan.

Brexit or populist & xenophobic madness

images

The British people have expressed their desire to leave the European Union, in a free and democratic process, as the main EU bodies have manifested. Like them, I regret this decision but I respect it.

But how it got here? The Oldest parliamentary democracy has given a lesson to the world about how not to do things. The Brexit referendum was an incomprehensible mistake of epic proportions, where even the more conservative leaders, those supporters of the Brexit, the morning after gave the impression that they had awakened from a night of drinking, wondering: “My God! What have we done?”.

As a result, the British people find themselves all of a sudden in an unnecessary and unprecedented economic and political crisis, and they can only blame themselves. Michael Gove, who was Education´ Minister in the Cabinet of David Cameron for four years said: “People in this country are fed up with the experts,” responding to warnings from the Bank of England, the heads of labor unions, the Britain’s leading businessmen, Barack Obama and, virtually all the informed and thinking people of the world who expressed against voting by the British exit from the EU. “Listen to your heart” Gove told instead to the voters!

Why the Londoners, the Northern Irish and the Scots have listened to the experts, disregarded the populists and voted overwhelmingly to stay in Europe? Because the Londoners live in one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, where many foreigners live and work with them every day and they see them contributing much to the city economically and socially; and Londoners find them as human as themselves. Regarding the Scots and Northern Irish, they were not indoctrinated from childhood with xenophobic and superiority feelings to the rest of the world.

Now that it is breaking out in England the xenophobic rage, it has been asked for, perhaps too late, a citizens’ petition to the British Parliament for the UK hold another referendum on remaining in the Union European, and it already has gathered more than 3 million people´s signatures. The petition has collapsed the House of Commons´ website because of the high number of people who came to join the proposal. Last Friday, the day after the vote, the largest search Google in England was, “What means leaving the EU?”. It shows the amount of knowledge and information that the British had before voting.

Right now several fronts are opened in the UK: the request for a new referendum on remaining in the EU; the request for a new referendum for the independence of Scotland; Gibraltar´s authorities are thinking of remaining on their own in the EU; in Northern Ireland the people asked for joining the Republic of Ireland, are just some examples.

The English people should immediately begin to suffer in their own what it means leaving the EU: paying the medical consultations and surgery in Spain; paying the import tariffs on European products; moving the City to another European city; get out of the Erasmus university plan; there are many, many consequences.

Politics should not be a frivolous game where vain and demagogue leaders encourage the notion which the masses´ wisdom is the greatest virtue of democracy. The state´ decisions are all debatable, but these require that those who take them, own civic responsibility and possess the knowledge about how the state works and know about what they speaking.

The main lesson that the world should learn is the nonsense in which the British citizens have fallen. As a result, we must be more alert than ever regarding the cheap populism of those who seek to achieve the power by appealing to their prejudices and resentments, such as Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen, or the Chavistas in Latin America and in Spain.

The Spanish Dilemma

debate

We know almost all the polls’ forecast before casting our vote on 26th June election, the second general election in Spain after six months. Although at this point, we do not know how it can be settled the winning great coalition after the elections. The Spanish people have the fear about going again to the polls for the third time  again around the next Christmas, which is at the moment more than just a hypothesis if there is not a political agreement.

There is no choice but waiting until Sunday night, in order to know the number of seats for each political party. But, according to the polls published in recent days, there is one fundamental coincidence: no one will have an overall majority, and therefore it will be required to make agreements in order to govern. If we realize about the positions expressed by the main parties in relation to these agreements, it is not madness to think about the hypothesis of a new political impasse, where the investiture of a Prime Minister is impossible.

These agreements could be shaped by getting together the Conservatives PP, the Social democratic PSOE, and the Liberals ‘Ciudadanos’, parties which meet the democratic requirements, as it happened to date since the democracy was restored in Spain in 1977. All the presidents so far, despite of their differences which were not few, were part of the great family of liberal democracy.

Those who do not fit into that model are the communists ‘Unidos Podemos’. They do not believe in formal and representative democracy. They do not believe in the market’ economy. They do not believe in the human rights as something inherent in the nature of the people. And they do not even believe in the virtues of belonging to the European Union.

Unless in a few days some million voters are changing their minds, it will be no party which approaches the minimum seats which allows them to form a Cabinet. The PP will win, yes, but not with the required majority and it could not rule without the support of the others. ‘Unidos Podemos‘, the populist communist party, will not achieved any ministry chair without the support of the PSOE. And it does not look that the socialists are willing to give the Administration to those who want to kill them.

It seems like the PSOE has the key to decide who will govern. But this decision, whatever it would be, place them in a very difficult situation and puts Spain in a terrible dilemma: either populism or a weak Cabinet.

I can not imagine why it is impossible to make a great coalition,  designed by clever men for the Spanish people, who have proven more than enough to seek the stability and tranquility since the first democratic elections of this period. As on the other hand, we should mirror in the countries of our surroundings, on which we should look in democratic terms, to Northern Europe.

Peru did not choose populism

images-1

Despite of such a tight result, I am pleased that Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has won the elections in Peru.

The conservative Kuczynski was the favourite internationally, also to the international financial markets and he represents the value of the experience, as he has been dedicated to Public service since his youth. He has been Minister of Finance, Prime Minister and Advisor to various cabinets during more than 50 years he is in politics.

He had Keiko Sofia Fujimori as opponent whose main dream was to clear the name of her father: the former president Alberto Fujimori, sentenced to 25 years in prison for corruption and crimes against humanity. Keiko had prepared thoroughly during the last five years to return to the Palace of Pizarro, home of the Peruvian government. Fujimori’s daughter represented all of the nostalgic of an authoritarian regime were looking for all of it Keiko was proposing in her program: heavy-handed: death penalty for paedophiles, Alcohol Prohibition, Army Forces in the streets to fight against crime and, construction of prisons over the four thousand meters high, so the prisoners could use their cell phones.

But Keiko is also the daughter of the man who ended the terrorist guerrilla Sendero Luminoso; the man who modernized the country and who managed to follow the path of growth in Peru. The dark side of his father’s regime is the shadow that is haunting Keiko:  the business with the drug’ traffickers, the people disappearances, the forced sterilization, the torture in the Central Intelligence’ basement, and the suitcases full of money from corruption and even the weapon’ trafficking with the FARC. The Harvard professor and Peru’s expert Steven Leviysky commented, “Keiko can be democratic. I do not know but have you seen who is going with her?”, many of the former employees to Alberto Fujimori’ Administration who were hiding during Keiko’s campaign to avoid damaging it. Peru did not need a Fujimori dynasty.

Kuczynski has become President of Peru by a minimal difference. With only 17% of the votes in the first round, Kuczynski knows that he owes his victory to the ‘antifujimorismo’. Although Keiko Fujimori lost the Presidential Chair, she is the absolute queen at the Congress. The new president will have to show off his ability to dialogue with his opposition. I believe that the new president could do very well his job, and certainly he has the experience. To the outside world it is a relief to see how the Peruvians, even for a minimal difference in the result, have not elected to populism.

Protecting Islam or freedom?

islam

The victims in Orlando were killed because they were gay, make no mistake. Because they liked the “wrong” sex and above all, they had the nerve not hide it, because they felt free. Thus, the fanatical terrorism is acting.

The homosexuality is not acquired after the birth neither is a mental illness. Some cultures and religions have accepted it and some other cultures and religions have not yet accepted it. We are confronting a fanaticism which wants to subdue the world.

Throughout the history, the religious fanaticism has been the most effective poison to unleash terror. The Islam’ issue is that, while other religions have forgotten the holy wars already for centuries, among the Muslims those are still present. The politically correct ones compare equidistant the religions and their holy wars over five centuries ago, with what it is currently happening with Islamist fanaticism. The big difference is that it happened more than five centuries ago!

Meanwhile the political opportunists like Mr. Trump, took the tragic events to attack the US government while urging to improve intelligence in order to better detect these radicals. He demanded a ban on immigration from Muslim countries, while refusing to ban the free purchase of weapons, “because people have the right to protect themselves“, i.e. the same old ennui rhetoric. Trump accused to Mrs. Clinton and President Obama for not using the words, “radical Islamic terrorism“, as a weakness. At that point I may agree, though perhaps was not the best time to try to catch some votes among the bloodshed.

In Spain it was even worse: the populist party ‘Unidos Podemos’, as they are funded by the Iranian regime, in addition to Venezuela, did not mention at any time that the author was a radical Muslim, but simply to say “our support for victims of Orlando and the two women killed. They were victims of the same scourge: The heteropatriarchy “. They also took the opportunity to campaign while congratulating to the Muslims for the Ramadan and mocking the Catholic Christmas. The populists are equal everywhere.

The Muslims themselves must fight against these jihadism’ cancer and must move towards a greater openness of Islam. And it is happening just the opposite. After the so-called ‘Arab Spring’, it has been a radicalization of those governments:  Turkey is walking from great openness towards a greater intransigence. Countries like Saudi Arabia that is favoured by the west for its economics while its population are undergoing a cruel tyranny that tramples all the human rights. And in Europe, in the Western democracies are allowing, under the false pretence of tolerance, signs of subjugation and religious radicalism.

The multiculturalism is failing. The multi-ethnic and pluralistic society observe with powerlessness and defeat what is happening. The western world and its values are in danger because we are not giving an adequate response to Islamic fundamentalism. We have forgotten our values and our ethics and, given our existential relativism, it seems like they are prevailing. The western cultures have overcome these stigma of the past, but we’re failing in the fight against the current challenges.

Nationalism and Marxism: an improbable equation

poster-depicting-karl-marx-friedrich-engels-and-lenin-unknown

Nationalism and Marxism are antagonist and irreconcilable.            The Nationalists parties in Spain have completely wrong concepts about political theory. And about their own ideology, which is even more serious. Historically, in the 19th century when nationalist movements were born, like in the rest of Europe, they were born to bourgeois and conservative ideology. The left-wing Nationalist parties, which later on became separatist, emerged in Spain during the 20th century while in the rest of Europe remained of Conservative ideology. The idea of Spain as a nation became then something shameful for left-wing parties. Since then, there has been much tolerance with these separatist parties which have proven not to be responsible,  political inconsistent, disloyal and with a lack of respect for the rule of law. This is happening right now in Catalonia.

It seems like the left-wing do not know, and the radical left even less, that in Marx and Engels’s thought and doctrine the Nation occupies a clearly subordinate place. According to the Communist Manifesto “the proletarians have no country“. This phrase has been quoted often to demonstrate how the founders of Scientific Socialism had very little consideration to the nations, especially in this particular historical period when all Europe was getting crazy about the nationalities. It could be right that their writings were the result of political contingencies and interest in polemics sometimes, but both postulated the nation and the nation state’s subordination to the laws of historical progress, convinced that the economic unification of the world would make the nations superfluous and thus, the national conflicts would be nullified.

Marx stated in his works “The Holly Family” and “The German Ideology” that the nation was a historical and unnatural creation, which was due to the rise of the bourgeoisie: the nation expressed the politicization of bourgeois’ civil society to acquire class’ consciousness, to favor their own economic dynamism and interests, conquering the state, appropriating their own legal and productive apparatus, to the detriment of the old feudal and aristocratic states. While it is an exclusive product of the bourgeoisie, it is a transient historical phenomenon linked to the evolution of the capitalist’ economic system, and therefore it is bound to its disappearance after the implantation of the Socialism. The proletarians have no reason to address the nation nor to recognize it.

The Marxist theory crumbles any generalized principle of self-determination, as it is reactionary and even useless, because would not provide any advantage to the cause of the proletariat.

Our particular populist, Mr. Iglesias, the Podemos’ leader, said last week ‘I will support the rights of Catalonia‘. Some days later said on TV ‘it is our intention but perhaps could be something else‘; it is the same like when Groucho Marx stated, ‘I have these principles but I should have other’. Mr. Iglesias was Assistant Professor of Political Theory at the University and he knows that the Nationalists do not match with the radical left, so he is able to say one thing and its opposite. For the sake of getting votes in Catalonia, of course. Although it seems like the radical left separatists do not know, and this is probably the reason why they are involved in a great contradiction and great cheating to the citizens.

Trump, the Latinos and the rogue states

Unknown

I wish that Donald Trump does not win the upcoming presidential elections in the US.

I have many reasons to justify such a wish. As an example, Kim Jong-un in North-Korea loves him: an editorial published in Pyongyang, North Korea, one of the so-called “rogue states”, referred to Trump in a very flattering terms, and describing him as a wise and visionary leader. The author of the text, published with the acquiescence of the local power of the Marxist-Leninist state, impinged on the many positive aspects about the policies announced by Trump, as his desire to withdraw all the US troops from South Korea. Trump spoke out last May in favor of opening a direct dialogue with the North Korean leader, the zany dictator Kim Jong-un, who has openly called for the vote for the Republican candidate! Trump has claimed that those countries like South Korea or Japan must pay for the deployment of US troops, stationed in those territories for decades, under his idea of “America comes first.”

On the other hand, Donald Trump, whose motto to launch his presidential race was “I am going to build a wall all along the entire Mexican border, and Mexico is going to pay for it“, again  showed his animosity to those who speak Spanish a few days ago: During a Trump´s press conference, some well-known journalist working for the Mexican television TV Azteca received a call and started to speak in Spanish. Trump´s campaign staff informed him that they were not interested anymore about the interview after which was programmed. It has not been the first incident starring Donald Trump with a Spanish speaker and a Mexican TV: The Mexican journalist Jorge Ramos of Univision TV had a verbal confrontation with the tycoon which culminated in the forced exit of the journalist at the hands of Trump´s security service. During these election campaign, Trump´s team has been closing over the access to most of the journalists and the Hispanic media, which are no longer receiving the appropriate accreditation in order to inform about it. Trump says that they have no interest in these media.

All these events are causing such a strong reaction among the Hispanic population of the US: In order to prevent that Mr. Trump win the November´ election, more than 750,000 legal residents in Los Angeles County (and more than two million throughout California), those who previously never found the time, money or patience to pass the tests required for the naturalization as US citizen, are doing it right now. Furthermore, those who, although citizens, had never before registered to vote, are registering now. Every election the relevance of the Latino vote increases, a community which is already about 27 million people who could vote in November. Trump´ outbursts and remarks on the Latino population, immigrants and especially against Mexicans, have been fueling the outrage and stimulated the decision of the residents with ability to make an opinion: only in California, are about 3.9 millions of Latinos voting. These makes an increase of 22% over the last presidential elections in 2012.

The South Koreans, the Latinos in the US are concerned about the slightest possibility of Trump winning the presidential election in the US. Many Americans share these concerns and so do I.

Fatwa against the Real Madrid

CjpCfFxW0AAGp6V

Being Real Madrid fan has become dangerous. At least at some places in Middle East. I still have fresh memories about the attack two weeks ago which sowed death in a ‘Madridista’ fans’ club at the Iraqi city of Samarra which took the lives of 16 people, when a new attack has hit to the Real Madrid fans in Iraq. This time, the terror occurred at the cafe Miqdadiyah, about 80 kilometers far from Baghdad, while the Real Madrid fans were watching the Champions League’ final on TV, which the Real Madrid achieved its 11th European Cup. At the time of the penalties, four armed men with assault submachine stormed the place and opened fire. “All the fallen’ fault was their passion for Real Madrid,” said the Real Madrid Association in Iraq, again hit by terror. The Daesh claimed both attacks in which most victims were teenagers and young people, aged between 13 and 20 years.

The solidarity of Real Madrid and FIFA with the victims and their families have not gone unnoticed by the Saudi radical cleric Al Qhayti, member of the Ulema’s Council of Saudi Arabia, who on May 23th issued a fatwa against the white club to whom he accused of siding with the “Shiite infidels”, the Islam’ wing to which the victims belonged: “Whoever supports the Shiites is against us and therefore our citizens should not follow its matches or support it,” said the Saudi religious calling on Saudi citizens with white heart to switching clubs.

The Iraqi press echoed this fatwa. The journalist Ali Dagher said that the main difference between Real Madrid vs Barcelona fans in Iraq is a matter of age: “the younger have grown up watching Barcelona winning so they became followers of Messi, but the veterans, those who know something of the recent history of football in Spain, we are Real Madrid’s. ” Until a few days ago the country was divided 50 percent between Madrid and Barcelona, but now the situation is changing, there are now more ‘madridistas’ after these sad events and the care showed by the club.

Mr. Florentino Perez, Real Madrid’ president, had a few words of tribute to them, ”they will always be a part of the Real Madrid’ memory.” The response of Real Madrid was immediate and warm which has impacted Iraqis, very used to their deaths barely have any space in the international media anymore. “The Iraqi fans have appreciated greatly the caring behavior of the club, including many who were Barcelona’s are changing colors. It will not bring us back out loved ones, but at least we know that there are people who remember us for who our lives mean something, ” said Hassan Nashat, in charge for the web ‘Iraqi football’, the most important in Iraq on football since 2001.

This is solidarity’ act for a club which has made of the stateliness its historic motto. But it shows also the awful situation in Iraq after the Daesh ‘occupation of much of its territory, whose aim with these attacks has been hitting to the Shiite population again in order to deepen the terrible wound afflicting to the whole country, a situation of which Saudi Arabia is not innocent.

These lines are my small tribute to the Iraqis, who are undergoing for endless pain since the last decades.
